雖然emo這個網路語在去年年末才火起來，但這個詞本身存在的時間卻很長，大致產生於20世紀80年代，直到2000年出現了一批樂隊將這個風格帶紅。它的樂手形象以及行為很特別，比如黑色直髮，修身的衣服和緊身牛仔褲，帆布平底鞋，眼線或眼影。樂隊的人也的確很情緒化。他們在演出的過程中毫不隱藏自己的情緒，可能唱到高潮部分便開始邊抽泣邊咆哮了，估計這就是為什麼叫“情緒搖滾”的原因了(據說EMO樂隊是最喜歡砸話筒的)。

同時，emo也可指情感核音樂迷。emo樂迷常追隨情感核時尚，典型形象是穿緊身牛仔褲，蓄黑色長髮（有一點類似我們常說的“非主流”形象），以衝動、敏感、憂鬱為特徵。所以網路語境下也常用emo來代表“喪”、“憂鬱”、“傷感”等含義。由此才引申有“我emo了”，“我直接emo了”等網路流行語。
